The Samajwadi Party has nominated Dhanraj Nathwani, a Reliance Industries executive, for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. Nathwani is the son of Parimal Nathwani, a senior Reliance executive who has previously served as a Rajya Sabha member with support from various political parties. The nomination comes as parties finalize candidates for the upper house polls scheduled across several states.

The Samajwadi Party has nominated Dhanraj Nathwani, a senior executive at Reliance Industries, as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, a selection that places a corporate leader on the party’s ticket for the upper house of Parliament (Indian Express).

Nathwani is the son of Parimal Nathwani, a long-serving Reliance Industries executive who has previously occupied a seat in the Rajya Sabha with backing from an assortment of political parties. The younger Nathwani’s candidature emerges as parties across several states finalise their slates for the biennial polls to the Council of States. The Samajwadi Party, which holds significant strength in the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly, commands enough votes to ensure the election of its nominees without requiring cross-voting or alliance support.

The decision to field a businessman with no prior electoral experience marks a departure from the party’s recent practice of nominating career politicians, legal experts, or social workers. While the Samajwadi Party has not issued a detailed public statement explaining the rationale behind the choice, the nomination aligns with a broader pattern in Indian politics where parties across the spectrum have accommodated industrialists and corporate professionals in the Rajya Sabha, often citing their expertise in economy and industry.

Parimal Nathwani’s own parliamentary career spanned multiple terms, during which he was elected with the support of parties including the Congress and the YSR Congress Party, reflecting a capacity to navigate diverse political formations. His son’s entry into the same chamber under the Samajwadi Party banner suggests a continuation of that cross-party acceptability, now anchored in the politics of Uttar Pradesh. The Election Commission has notified the schedule for the vacancies, and the filing of nominations is currently underway.
