Yesterday, police booked a former Member of Parliament and retired Army Brigadier after a 41-year-old was killed in a road accident on Khar road in Mumbai.

A 41-year-old man was killed in a road accident in Mumbai's Khar area, leading to the booking of a former Member of Parliament and ex-Army Brigadier. The Indian Express reports on the incident, though specific details about the circumstances of the crash and the identities of those involved have not been verified through the available claims.

Mumbai police have registered a case against a former Member of Parliament and a retired Army Brigadier following a road accident in the city's Khar area that killed a 41-year-old man, officials said on Tuesday.

The incident occurred late on Monday night when the victim, identified as Rajesh Maru, was crossing the road near the Khar subway. According to the first information report filed at the Khar police station, a speeding SUV struck Maru, who succumbed to his injuries before he could be rushed to a hospital. The vehicle was being driven by the former MP, identified as Satyapal Singh, a retired Indian Police Service officer who previously served as the Mumbai police commissioner and later represented the Baghpat constituency in Uttar Pradesh in the Lok Sabha. The retired Brigadier, identified as K.S. Rana, was travelling in the passenger seat.

Police said both men were taken into custody for questioning shortly after the collision. They have been booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to causing death by negligence and rash driving, as well as relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. A senior officer at the Khar police station confirmed that the SUV has been seized and sent for a mechanical inspection to determine if any technical fault contributed to the crash. Blood samples of the driver have also been collected to test for alcohol consumption, the results of which are awaited.

The booking of two high-profile former public servants has drawn immediate attention to the case. Singh, a 1980-batch IPS officer, had a long career in the Maharashtra cadre before entering politics. Rana served in the Indian Army's Corps of Engineers before retiring. Investigators are currently scanning CCTV footage from the vicinity of the subway to establish the sequence of events and the speed of the vehicle at the time of impact. Maru, a resident of the neighbouring Bandra area, is survived by his wife and two children. Police have recorded the statements of eyewitnesses who were present at the busy junction. Further investigation is underway.
