Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Kollam on Saturday to serve as chief guest at the 73rd birthday celebrations of spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi Ji, an event that proceeded against a backdrop of brief but sharp political confrontation (The Hindu). Moments after his helicopter touched down near the Asramam ground, a group of Youth Congress activists led by Binu Chulliyil surged toward the moving motorcade waving black flags in protest. Police personnel intervened swiftly, forcibly removing the demonstrators to clear the route, while a standoff erupted briefly between the protesters and local Bharatiya Janata Party supporters who had gathered at the venue (The Hindu).
Despite the disruption, the official itinerary continued without further incident. Shah travelled onward to Kundara to inaugurate a programme organised by the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India Limited (NCCF), before proceeding to Amritapuri to formally launch the ‘Viswa Sevana Dina’ observances marking the seer’s birthday (The Hindu). In his capacity as Minister of Cooperation, Shah also launched a series of initiatives focused on women’s empowerment and the cooperative sector during the visit, according to a release from the Press Information Bureau (PIB). The PIB statement detailed the minister’s participation in the birthday functions and the launch of the cooperative and welfare programmes but did not reference the protest that greeted his arrival (PIB).
