Delhi Master Plan 2047 Released as Roadmap for Viksit Delhi

The Delhi government today launched the Delhi Master Plan 2047, positioning it as a blueprint to transform the capital into a "Viksit Delhi" aligned with the national Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. Unveiled through an official communique, the plan outlines strategies to address urbanization challenges while promoting sustainable development (PIB).

The document, developed in consultation with urban planners and stakeholders, emphasizes infrastructure upgrades, green energy integration, and equitable resource distribution. It identifies key focus areas such as affordable housing, efficient public transport, and digital governance, aiming to cater to Delhi’s projected population growth of over 30 million by 2047 (PIB). Officials highlighted that the plan prioritizes climate resilience, proposing measures like solar-powered public facilities and expanded green spaces to mitigate urban heat islands.

As part of the broader Viksit Bharat 2047 initiative, the Delhi Master Plan 2047 seeks to align local development with national goals for economic growth and social inclusion. The central government has endorsed the framework, describing it as a model for other metropolitan areas to emulate (PIB). However, implementation details, including funding mechanisms and timelines for specific projects, remain unspecified in the initial announcement.

Critics have raised questions about the feasibility of such long-term planning, citing past delays in executing similar urban development schemes. The government has not yet addressed how it will coordinate with Delhi’s multiple administrative bodies, including the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the New Delhi Municipal Council, to ensure unified execution.

While the plan’s vision has been broadly outlined, concrete steps for public consultation and private sector involvement are still pending. The absence of a detailed roadmap for addressing Delhi’s acute issues—such as air pollution and water scarcity—has drawn cautious scrutiny from environmental experts.
