Assam Flood Death Toll Rises to 75 as Relief Announced
With seven new fatalities reported in Sivasagar, floods continue to impact over 330,000 people across seven districts in Assam.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the flood situation in Assam with members of parliament from the state as the death toll rose to 75. The meeting came after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a relief package of Rs 9 lakh for affected families.
The death toll in the Assam floods climbed to 75 on Tuesday after seven more fatalities were reported from Sivasagar district, all attributed to drowning (Indian Express). Seven districts remain severely affected, with 3,32,639 people across 622 villages impacted and 45,341 hectares of crop area submerged (Indian Express).
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a relief package for affected families. Families of the deceased will receive a combined Rs 9 lakh in compensation, comprising a Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia payment — with the post-mortem requirement waived — and an additional Rs 5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (Indian Express). Over one lakh severely flood-affected families will receive Rs 15,000 in cash. Students in the worst-hit districts will receive book grants starting August 1, ranging from Rs 1,000 for Higher Secondary students to Rs 5,000 for postgraduates (Indian Express).
