Hindutva ideologue T.G. Mohandas sparked controversy by stating he "would have shot" protesters at Jantar Mantar, according to reports from The Hindu and Reddit News. The remark has drawn sharp criticism and ignited a political row over the rhetoric used against demonstrators at the prominent protest site in New Delhi. The incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding protest movements and the language employed by ideological figures in public discourse.
A video posted on Sunday to the YouTube channel Pathrika showed Hindutva ideologue T.G. Mohandas, a former head of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s State intellectual cell in Kerala, describing in detail how he would have cleared protesters from Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. “I will impose a curfew in about a 4 square kilometre area around Jantar Mantar. Then I would announce thrice for the crowd to disperse. After that, I will shoot. People will scatter away and run for their lives. Some may die, some may suffer disabilities. Within four hours, the situation will be calm. Then I will collect the bodies and take them to hospitals,” he said in the 30-minute address (The Hindu).
The remarks, which surfaced widely on Monday, July 27, 2026, were framed around student demonstrations organised by the Cockroach Janta Party and other Opposition groups against alleged irregularities in the NEET examination. In a separate video, Mohandas turned his rhetoric toward women participants. “Gangrapes will happen. In this case, there won’t be any complaints as these are people who like being raped. There are women who like being raped, especially Leftists, secular, democratic and proletarians. Now if someone dies during this, they will turn the person into a martyr,” he said (The Hindu).
Rajya Sabha member A.A. Rahim, national president of the Democratic Youth Federation of India, told The Hindu that the comments would be “dealt with politically and legally.” He added: “This is an opinion which exposes the BJP, because BJP leaders are making Mr. Mohandas say things which they believe in but cannot say openly in a society like Kerala. Such things are being said with a clear aim to spread divisions in society. The Supreme Court has in the past issued clear warnings against such hate speech. I have already sent the video to advocates to take the necessary legal action” (The Hindu).
NDTV reported that Mohandas subsequently issued a clarification regarding the statements (Reddit News). Meanwhile, Maktoob Media highlighted the specific slur directed at women protesters, characterising it as a claim that they were “rape-loving” (Reddit News). The videos drew severe criticism across social media platforms, though supportive comments also appeared on his YouTube channel (The Hindu). It remains unclear whether formal legal proceedings have been initiated or what disciplinary steps, if any, the BJP or the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh may take.
